Sutcliffe has ‘eye for a story’, judges say, as Post scoops Yorkshire award

YORKSHIRE POST chief football writer Richard Sutcliffe has been named as the O2 Sports Journalist of the Year for Yorkshire and the Humber.

The 38-year-old was presented with the award at a dinner attended by more than 200 journalists and guests at York Racecourse.

Judges praised Sutcliffe’s sports work, saying that it, “demonstrated a range of superb writing skills”.

Included in his portfolio were features and news stories about Bradford City, Leeds United and Hull City, along with an exclusive interview with Johnny Giles and a four-page look-back at the Valley Parade fire disaster 25 years on.

The judges added: “The work included brilliantly researched features looking back at the Bradford City Fire disaster which also included exclusive information that had been secret for 25 years.

“He took readers on an emotional journey – descriptive, knowledgeable and creative. He is a reporter with an eye for a story and the talent to deliver.”

Sutcliffe was presented with the award by Great Britain fencer Hannah Lawrence.
