BREAKING NEWS:Sheffield Wednesday appoint Megson as manager

Sheffield Wednesday have unveiled Gary Megson as the new Hillsborough manager.

Owls chairman Milan Mandaric ended Alan Irvine's 13-month tenure at Hillsborough on Thursday following a poor run of form that has seen the npower League One side slip out of promotion contention.

Megson, who has been out of work since his exit from Bolton in December 2009, had two successful spells with Wednesday as a player in the 1980s and is known to hold a strong affection for the club.

The 51-year-old was previously appointed by Mandaric at Leicester in 2007, but he stayed with the Foxes for just six weeks before being approached by Bolton.

He was unveiled at a 5pm press conference and will take charge of Wednesday in their home clash with MK Dons tomorrow.

Wednesday chairman Mandaric said: "I am delighted with this appointment because Gary Megson is a top drawer manager.

"He has tremendous experience in the Championship and the Premiership and that is where Sheffield Wednesday needs to be.

"He also has a huge affinity with the club as a former player. Gary is hungry for success, he is very ambitious and his ambitions match my own.

"My target when I bought this club was promotion this season then the Premiership and that remains the case. I am really excited about where Sheffield Wednesday can go and Gary feels exactly the same way."
