Brentford suffer shock exit in Cup

FA Cup: Wrexham sprung the shock of Saturday’s FA Cup second round ties, seeing off League One Brentford to make sure of their place in yesterday’s third round draw.

Jamie Tolley’s 33rd-minute goal enabled the Blue Square Premier leaders to emerge victorious from Griffin Park.

Brentford manager Uwe Rosler said: “They out-played us, they out-fought us, they showed more desire than we did.

“The performance by a mile was not good enough.

“Unfortunately we did not learn any lessons from the Basingstoke game and it is my responsibility to find out why.”

League rivals Tamworth were also in the third round draw after winning 2-1 at Gateshead.

Gateshead goalkeeper Jak Alnwick was at fault for both goals as Tamworth beat their Blue Square Bet Premier rivals.

Francino Francis put the Lambs ahead from two yards after Alnwick, on loan from Newcastle, dropped a corner.

Then Heed had Chris Carruthers sent off for a foul on Danny Mills but Alnwick saved Kieron St Aimie’s penalty.

Nathan Fisher swivelled and finished to make it 1-1 but Alnwick dropped another corner in the last minute and Kyle Patterson was the Lambs’ hero.

Conference South side Chelmsford are in the draw – but they face a replay against Macclesfield after a 1-1 draw in Essex. Max Cornhill raised home hopes of an upset in the 35th minute but Tony Diagne levelled in the 64th minute.

Salisbury are also in the hat after a goalless home draw against Grimsby.
