Burnley 3 Burton Albion 1: Howe joins Eagles fan club after Burnley winger grabs double

Burnley boss Eddie Howe hailed two-goal hero Chris Eagles after watching his side progress to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup with a 3-1 win over Burton.

The former Manchester United midfielder scored a superb opener on 29 minutes and doubled his tally in the second half, with Calvin Zola pulling one back for the League Two side before Martin Paterson rounded off the scoring in injury time.

"He's the type of player you can build a team around," Howe said of the 26-year-old Eagles.

"There's been talk of teams coming in for him, but we definitely want to keep hold of all our better players, and he is amongst that group.

"It was a tough game for us. We knew Burton would make it difficult for us and it's turned out that way," he said.

"At 2-0 up we looked to be comfortable seeing the game out, but they scored and it lifted them.

"The third goal eased the nerves a little, though, and after that we saw the game out well.

"We'll have to wait and see what the last 16 draw brings for us. Down the years I've hoped for a lot of things that haven't come to fruition, but I suppose a home draw is the best we can hope for."

Burton manager Paul Peschisolido said: "I thought the scoreline flattered Burnley.

"Chris Eagles has got that bit of magic that we had to deal with a few times, but we dominated the game in spells so I'm proud of my players.

"We had Burnley on the back foot a few times in the first half, and then at the end it looked as though we might push on after Calvin had scored our goal.

"We've come up against an excellent Championship side, but we've matched them in certain aspects. There's been so many positives to take, but we've got lots of games coming up and so we need to take performances like this into our League Two games.

"The boys were superb, but it's about not letting our standards drop now."

Stevenage manager Graham Westley was proud of his players despite their heartbreaking 2-1 FA Cup fourth-round defeat to Championship side Reading.

Mikele Leigertwood had put the Royals 1-0 ahead in the first half before Darius Charles equalised for the home side, but it was Shane Long's strike three minutes from time that ended Stevenage's hopes of progressing to the fifth round.

Westley said: "The lads feel very deflated back there. They have put a brilliant effort in today, but we've fallen to a late goal from an excellent striker so that's the way it goes."
