Bury 0 Barnsley 0: Adam Hammill sees red as Tykes are checked

BARNSLEY were held to their first draw of 2016 by a stubborn Bury side at Gigg Lane.

The Tykes dominated much of an entertaining Roses clash, though they appeared to shut up shop in the closing stages after Adam Hammill was deservedly sent off in the 83rd minute.

Barnsley controlled the first half in which the hosts did not register an effort on target.

The visitors went close early on when Conor Hourihane blazed a shot over from eight yards.

Defender Alfie Mawson saw a piledriver blocked by Peter Clarke and Lloyd Isgrove was thwarted by a brilliant save from Bury goalkeeper Ian Lawlor, who then dived full length to tip over Josh Scowen’s arrowed strike.

Barnsley’s leading scorer Sam Winnall missed the best chance of the opening half, smashing a volley wildly over the top from six yards after Hammill’s corner kick had not been cleared.

Bury looked re-energised in the early stages of the second period, with Craig Jones testing Adam Davies and Tom Pope seeing a goalbound header blocked by centre-back Mawson.

Barnsley went close again when Winnall met Hammill’s cross only for Lawlor to make a fine save.
