Bury 2 Doncaster 0: Flynn is sure Rovers will respond if they can show better finishing

DONCASTER fell to a shock defeat as Bury earned their first win in 13 matches – and denied Rovers a 13th unbeaten away performance.

The previous time Rovers found themselves at Gigg Lane, a decade ago, they went on to win the old Division Three title.

Sitting joint top of the table, with a healthy cushion over third place and oozing confidence, Rovers will have approached this game in optimistic mood.

But the home side scored twice without reply to defeat Brian Flynn’s side.

Chris Brown, David Syers and Rob Jones had all gone close for the visitors before Andy Bishop’s glancing header from Nicky Ajose’s cross put Bury ahead in the 25th minute.

Joe Skarz’s inswinging corner 11 minutes later sailed over the head of Rovers goalkeeper Gary Woods and off the far post to Ajose, who applied the final touch.

Rovers manager Flynn said: “I don’t like the taste of defeat and I know it won’t happen many times between now and the end of the season.

“I’ve had a good start (as manager of Doncaster) and I know for a fact looking at the second half there was a positive reaction to the events of the first half.

“We’re going to have to finish better between now and the end of the season. We’re going to have to be more clinical, more cool and we will be.”

Bury manager Kevin Blackwellsaid: “Slowly, we’re trying to piece a team together.

“Until we came out of the transfer embargo, we couldn’t really change it around.”
