Will Buckley almost put Wednesday – who made 10 changes from the side which had beaten Aston Villa 48 hours earlier in the Championship – ahead when he stepped in off the flank and rattled a shot off the inside of David Gregory’s post.

And moments later in the 52nd minute, a youthful Owls team were ahead when Joao cut in from the right and slotted the ball under the body of Gregory.

The home side took the game into extra-time with a superb stoppage-time strike from Mingoia when he unleashed a magnificent effort with his weaker left goot that flew past Wildsmith via the far post.

Cambridge had dominated the extra period and their pressure paid off two minutes from the end of extra time when Berry latched onto Josh Coulson’s ball into the box, turned his marker and fired across Wildsmith and into the net.

Dani Carvajal was the unlikely hero as he fired Real Madrid to a Super Cup victory over 10-man Sevilla with a brilliant extra-time winner.

The full-back struck with a penalty shoot-out looming, running from near halfway before drilling the ball past Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico with the outside of his right foot to earn Madrid a dramatic 3-2 win in Trondheim.

Madrid were trailing 2-1 deep into stoppage-time at the end of 90 minutes when captain Sergio Ramos headed them level, and Carvajal made the most of their escape.
