The Bantams also came close to snatching a late victory, but Gareth Evans’s sweet strike cannoned off the inside of both posts to safety.

But despite agonisingly missing out on maximum points, the Bantams remain unbeaten under Trueman and joint interim manager Connor Sellars.

“We reaped our rewards in the way we played,” said Trueman. “I think overall we’ll take the draw, but obviously it’s about chances and goals – and we had the better chance late one.

“I thought we stuck to our game-plan, which was being hard to beat. We managed good spells of possession against the top team in the league and we caused them problems at times.

“We applied ourselves well. I think people thought we might finish a big leggy and they would get on top of us, but I think we actually finished the stronger team.”

Debutant Danny Rowe impressed and forced a smart first-half save from keeper Dimitar Mitov. Bantams shot-stopper Sam Hornby thwarted Paul Mullin with three fine blocks to frustrate the U’s at the Abbey Stadium.

But midfielder Evans was unlucky not to win it as his stinging strike somehow failed to cross the line.

“When it hit the second post I just thought it was going to roll in,” admitted Trueman. “It’s amazing how it stayed out because it would have been amazing to nick the three points at the end. It was just unfortunate for us.”
