Following a goalless 90 minutes at the Bescott Stadium, the Owls eventually triumphed 4-2 in the shoot-out, with Izzy Brown converting the decisive spot-kick.

"I’m pleased overall," Monk reflected.

"It’s the first 90 minutes for all of those players. We knew we were going to play against a team that’s probably a little bit further ahead in terms of minutes, we knew they were going to compete physically.

"Overall, we controlled the game defensively, the structure was good and we didn’t really suffer anything on our goal which is pleasing.

"Offensively we got into some good situations, especially in that second half. We didn’t finish those chances off."

Meanwhile, Wednesday's Championship rivals Barnsley progressed to the second round courtesy of a 1-0 home win over Nottingham Forest.

Cauley Woodrow netted the only goal of the contest in the 48th minute following a scramble in the away box.

Huddersfield Town endured a frustrating afternoon, losing out 1-0 at home to League One Rochdale.

The Terriers were undone by Eoghan O'Connell's second-half header, but despite seeing his charges beaten by lower-league opposition, new head coach Carlos Corberan insisted that he was able to take some positives from what he saw.

“I’m very happy with the effort of the team today, and I didn’t think we deserved the result," he said.

“We still have so much to work on, but the commitment is there from all the players.”

Bradford City came out on top of their all-League Two showdown with Bolton Wanderers.

Lee Novak's cool finish from a Tyler French pass put the Bantams ahead midway through the first period, though Antoni Sarcevic got the Trotters back on terms just moments after the resumption.

But City were not to be denied a place in the second-round draw and substitute Harry Pritchard's cushioned header from a lofted Anthony O'Connor cross would eventually decide matters 16 minutes from time.
