Cardiff City 2 Doncaster Rovers 1: O'Driscoll happy with Rovers display

A LATE winner came as no surprise to Doncaster Rovers manager Sean O'Driscoll – but he was not expecting it to go to hosts Cardiff City.

Rovers dominated after the interval and once they had equalised Cardiff's first-half effort seemed certain to land all three points. Certainly, that was O'Driscoll's expectation.

"I was very pleased with the performance because our second half was excellent after we had sorted out how to stop (Michael) Chopra's runs", said O'Driscoll.

"I thought we would go on and win the match even before we equalised because we were in total control in the second half".

Chopra had put Cardiff ahead early in the opening period and then squandered enough chances to have notched up a hat-trick before the interval.

Rovers took over in the second half and it was no surprise when they equalised just after the hour with a rasping drive by Gareth Roberts, but Bothroyd popped up to bundle home Peter Whittingham's corner in the 91st minute.

The win enabled Cardiff to temporarily forget their off-field problems – 2.7m has to be paid to the Inland Revenue by February 10 in order to prevent the club going into administration, but it is believed that most, if not all, of this amount will be found and paid on time.

Manager Dave Jones said: "We keep patching them up and sending them out and they continue to work their socks off.

"We know the circumstances and what we have to do as I can't bring anyone in at the moment because of the financial situation at the club".

Cardiff went ahead in the ninth minute when Whittingham slotted a superb pass through to Chopra. The striker brought the ball down in one movement before smashing a right-foot shot into the far corner .

Chopra found himself one-on-one with Neil O'Sullivan on two other occasions in the first half but was unable to add to the score.

The second half was a totally different affair as the visitors pushed the Bluebirds back.

Their midfield began to dictate play and when John Oster swung a pass out wide to Roberts the Wales international fired across David Marshall and into the net for the equaliser in the 64th minute.

It was all Rovers but they could not get the second goal their display deserved and Cardiff snatched the winner when Whittingham's corner was bundled in by Bothroyd.
