Cardiff City v Huddersfield Town: Home form key for Terriers, believes Harry Bunn

ON an afternoon featuring a truncated Championship programme, Huddersfield Town have an opportunity to steal a march on their rivals.

Not a massive one, granted. Even victory today will, at most, take David Wagner’s men up a couple of places to 15th.

But, in terms of the remaining few months of the season, January 30 may prove to be an important date in Huddersfield’s calendar due to three of the bottom four all being in action elsewhere.

Town have taken giant strides away from trouble during an eight-game run that has yielded four wins but in the unpredictable world of the Championship no side can ever consider themselves truly safe even with the eight-point cushion that Wagner’s men possess over third bottom Bristol City. Hence why victory over Cardiff City could be so crucial.

Harry Bunn, for one, is confident that the Terriers can maintain the upwards progress of recent weeks.

“We have shown that we can outplay some good teams already this season,” said the 23-year-old. “I watched the Middlesbrough home game from the side and we were unlucky on the day (to lose 2-0).

“You can see that we control games more than we used to because of this style of play. In this league, winning your home games will help you stay in the top half of the table.

“We have been pretty good at home recently, so we want to keep that going this weekend.

“I would like to think that we could finish around mid-table this season to give us something to build on next year.”

Tommy Smith, dismissed in last weekend’s defeat at Brighton, and Mark Hudson are both suspended today, the latter having collected 10 yellow cards to incur a two-game ban.

Martin Cranie will switch to central defence and Kyle Dempsey is expected to slot in at right-back.

Last six games: Huddersfield Town WDWDLL, Cardiff City DWLLWD.

Referee: D Webb (County Durham).
