Carlisle United v Leeds United: Bromby desperate to wipe out his Wembley heartache

The 29-year-old defender was on loan at Sheffield United from Watford as the Yorkshire club were pipped to promotion by Burnley in front of more than 80,000 fans.

Seeing the Blades lose such an important game was bad enough, but not being able to influence the result due to being confined to the bench by manager Kevin Blackwell just added to the frustration and it was a dejected Bromby who left the national stadium on the evening of May 24.

Eight months on, however, and the defender is eyeing an altogether happier return to Wembley as Leeds United tonight look to overturn a one-goal deficit against Carlisle United in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Bromby, who joined Leeds for around 250,000 from the Blades last August, knows Simon Grayson's men have it all to do after losing the first leg 2-1 at Elland Road.

But the lifelong Leeds fan believes tonight can bring a repeat of May 2008 when they overturned an identical deficit to reach the League One play-off final.

He said: "It will be another tough game up there but I think we will go there full of confidence that we can turn it around. It would be great to get through to Wembley.

"I was on the bench for Sheffield United in the play-off final last season but didn't get on. It was really frustrating and I would love to get the chance to grace the field.

"Not many players get the chance to appear at Wembley and this is a big opportunity we don't want to waste. The priority is the league because we have to go up this season. But we still want to get to the final."

Tonight's game, which kicks off at the unusual time of 7pm, will be the second time in seven days that Leeds have played in front of the live television cameras.

The FA Cup fourth-round replay against Tottenham Hotspur ended in a 3-1 defeat but Bromby insists there were plenty of positives for the League One promotion chasers.

He said: "We gave a good account of ourselves in the FA Cup against Tottenham, and especially at White Hart Lane in the first game. We put on a good show.

"Obviously, they are a good team and their quality shone through during the second half last week. But we can take a lot of positives."

Grayson could tonight hand new signings Gary McSheffrey and Shane Lowry their debuts in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The pair joined Leeds just before the transfer window closed and since the first leg defeat to Carlisle.

In the FA Cup, no player can appear in a replay if signed since the first tie took place but no such rule about not being able to play in a second game against the same opposition applies in the competition for League One and Two clubs.

Max Gradel, who appeared for United in the Northern Area quarter-final win over Grimsby Town when on loan from Leicester City, is also eligible following his permanent switch from the Walkers Stadium last month.

Leeds will be looking to maintain the upturn in league form that saw the home win over Colchester United 10 days ago followed by a 2-2 draw at Hartlepool United.

Captain Richard Naylor said: "The Colchester game was important. Swindon had been a massive disappointment so it was vital we got back on track. It was a good performance against a side near the top of the division.

"We are looking to reel in Norwich. If we win our games in hand then we will be right up there again."

Striker Jermaine Beckford could miss the match.

United's leading scorer this season was withdrawn at half-time in the weekend draw at Hartlepool due to a slight hamstring problem.

Leeds manager Simon Grayson said: "His hamstring was tight. It's nothing major, but we're not taking any chances. He could have played on, but we have a lot of games coming up."

Grayson is also waiting on the return to fitness of central defender Patrick Kisnorbo, who has missed the last three matches due to a calf injury, and midfielder Neil Kilkenny.

Kilkenny has also been sidelined since being forced out of the recent 3-0 defeat at Swindon.

Carlisle striker Joe Anyinsah could return after missing their last two games with a groin problem.

Loan signings Darryl Duffy and Ben Marshall are both cup-tied, meaning Scott Dobie could be recalled to the starting line-up.
