The Middlesbrough striker has initially joined the Owls on loan for the rest of the season, with that being the precursor to a permanent transfer in the summer – regardless of whether Wednesday are promoted or not.

Carvalhal believes that the Owls played the perfect waiting game, with Rhodes’s path to South Yorkshire being cleared in the final hours of deadline day.

Boro ultimately agreed to let him out on loan, with the proviso that it turned into a full-time move at the end of the season.

Both clubs left it late, with the Owls enduring an anxious 12-hour wait before Football League officials confirmed the relevant documentation was completed ahead of Monday night’s 11pm deadline.

Carvalhal, who has rubbished talk that the set fee for Rhodes is £10m, said: “Our chairman is very clever and a successful man in business and he did a fantastic deal.

“We talked about the situation at the beginning of the month and I knew in particular that we could only achieve (sign) this type of player in the last minute because of the compromises that we have, the Financial Fair Play.

“There are fantastic conditions. The numbers (fee) are not the ones in the press.”

He added: “He is one of the top scorers in the Championship in previous years. I like to look at the history of players and we are happy to sign one with this kind of profile. He is ambitious and wanted to play a lot for Sheffield Wednesday.”

Rhodes’s arrival has added to an already well-stocked forward department, with the Owls now having six recognised frontline strikers, when fit and available, in Rhodes, Steven Fletcher, Sam Winnall, Gary Hooper, Fernando Forestieri and Atdhe Nuhiu.

But Carvalhal insists that any selection dilemmas will represent a nice headache and will not pose a problem to him.

He said: “I am not worried. I think the people around are more worried about that than me in that I have to make decisions.

“I have read a lot of comments. But it is not a problem to me. I must choose the best players to play and I am not worried about making decisions. It is a good part of my job.”
