Cauley Woodrow has plenty to celebrate at Barnsley

The Reds marksman, who turned 26 yesterday, afforded himself the perfect gift ahead of his milestone after his goalscoring contribution in the club’s 2-1 televised success at Birmingham City – netting his 40th goal for the club.

Woodrow struck his sixth goal of the season, a coolly-taken 71st-minute penalty on another key night in the evolution of a growing Barnsley side, who came from behind to triumph in a second-tier game for the first time since Easter Saturday in April 2018.

The irrepressible Callum Styles struck a deflected winner with six minutes remaining as Barnsley afforded themselves another evening to remember at the Midlands venue – which has been the scene of some famous results in the club’s modern history.

It was another impressive result for the Reds, who claimed their fifth win in eight matches under head coach Valerien Ismael, enjoying an outstanding start to life at Oakwell after succeeding Gerhard Struber.

Woodrow commented: “I think that epitomises what we are all about. We were 1-0 down, but never gave up and kept fighting and that is what the manager wanted.

“It is what we are all about and to come out winning 2-1, we are absolutely delighted.

“It was a little birthday goal for me and I am really happy. Ten more goals and I get to fifty and I will try and get there.

“In this league, there are such fine margins at times and you can be so close to winning and also losing. We got that little bit of luck along the way, but worked really hard for our luck and fully deserved it.

“Jack (Walton) did not really have much to do and their goal caught us by surprise, but we knew we had time to get back into the game.”

Given the nature of Tuesday’s events, a quick turnaround ahead of another televised game on Friday evening against Bournemouth at Oakwell is something that Woodrow and his team-mates are embracing.

He added: “We are buzzing now. We came off the back of two losses and needed a win (at Birmingham) and got one.

“It is a quick turnaround, but there are no excuses. We will recover and give it our all on Friday.

“We are on the TV again, which is good and hopefully we can do it again on Friday.”
