Charles Vernam cites Valley Parade vibe as he becomes Bradford City's eighth transfer window signing

The Bantams fought off interest from a number of clubs to sign forward Charles Vernam from Burton Albion for an undisclosed fee. He has signed a contract until the end of next season.

“As soon as I heard of the interest from Bradford City, I knew where I needed to be,” said the 24-year-old.

“I remember playing here last season for Grimsby, and the stadium was pretty much full. You do not forget those sorts of moments, and I want to be able to experience that kind of an atmosphere again.

“It is a massive club with a big footballing community, which is an important part of being a player. You want to be somewhere where you feel important and wanted by the supporters.

“I am here to show people what I am about, which is attacking football. I like to take people on, score and assist. I believe I can bring that to this football club to hopefully help us climb the table.”

Joint manager Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars spoke of wanting to add a wide players to the squad after the arrivals of Will Huffer, Jordan Stevens, Niall Canavan, Rumarn Burrell, Matthew Foulds, Danny Rowe and Andy Cook, but stressed Vernam's versatility.

“He has bags of ability and plenty of potential, and can be deployed in various roles across our attack,” they said in a statement.

“A number of other clubs - at this level and higher - showed interest in him, which speaks volumes of how much he wanted to play for Bradford City.”

Injuries have been an issue for Vernam at Burton, limiting him to just 16 appearances and two goals since joining in the summer.

Vernham began his career in the Scunthorpe United youth system, moving to Derby County as an 18-year-old without playing for them either. He had two seasons at Grimsby Town, who had been linked with him again in this window, before moving on to the Brewers.

In addition there have been loan spells to clubs as varied as Chorley and Icelandic side IBV.
