The former England left-back was dismissed yesterday following a weekend that saw the Addicks slump to the foot of the Championship and be knocked out of the FA Cup by Sheffield United. Belgian Jose Riga, former technical director at AC Milan’s Academy, was named as Powell’s successor prior to kick-off.

Town chief Robins, whose side lost to Charlton in the Cup, said: “I wish Chris all the best for the future; I’m sure he’ll be back very soon.

“We know Charlton’s players, although we don’t know which ones will be out there given the change.

“In any case, they will come out desperate to win the game because, regardless of how many games they have in hand, they will want points in the bag.

“I am sure it will have been a bitter pill to swallow when they went out of the FA Cup to Sheffield United on Sunday, too.

“They had a big chance to go ahead in that game, the ball went past the post and their opposition took full advantage.”

Last six games: Charlton Athletic LLWWLL, Huddersfield Town WLWLWL.

Last time: Charlton Athletic 0 Huddersfield Town 1; January 5, 2012; FA Cup.

Referee: B Malone (Wiltshire).
