Chesterfield 1 Middlesbrough 2: Arca and McDonald on target against Spireites

Middlesbrough held off a spirited late fightback from League Two side Chesterfield to progress to round two of the Carling Cup.

Scott McDonald slid the ball into the corner of the home net on the back of an excellent counter-attack to hand the Championship side the lead, before Julio Arca hammered his shot in for a 2-0 lead.

The Spireites kept pressing, though, and were rewarded when Dwayne Mattis headed in Danny Whitaker's cross with just over 20 minutes remaining on the clock.
