Clark watches from his office as Town reach play-off final

LEE CLARK hailed last night’s penalty shoot-out victory for Huddersfield Town over Bournemouth as “my best moment in football”.

The Terriers are looking forward to a visit to Old Trafford for the League One final on May 29 after a truly dramatic night at Galpharm Stadium.

After the two sides had shared six goals in 120 pulsating minutes to leave the tie locked at 4-4 on aggregate, Town triumphed 4-2 in a shoot-out that saw Ian Bennett save Liam Feeney’s spotkick and Anton Robinson hit the crossbar with his effort.

With Lee Novak, Danny Ward, Kevin Kilbane and Antony Kay all successfully converting from 12 yards, it means Town are just one game away from possibly ending a 10-year absence from the second tier of English football.

Peterborough United or Milton Keynes Dons, who meet tonight at London Road, will await Clark’s men in the final, which is not being played at Wembley this year due to the Champions League showpiece between Manchester United and Barcelona taking place on the Saturday night.

Clark, whose side extended their unbeaten run to 27 games by avoiding defeat against the Cherries, said: “This is my best moment in football.

“I had some magnificent nights as a player but this tops the lot.

“As a player, you just look after yourself but, as a manager, you have to look after everyone.

“I am also delighted for the owner. He is a Huddersfield Town fan, through and through. And he deserves this.

“It is fantastic for my team as well.”

Roared on by a passionate crowd of 16,444, Town twice led through Lee Peltier and Danny Ward only to be pegged back by Steve Lovell’s brace.

Danny Ings then put Bournemouth ahead in extra time only for Kay to equalise and send the tie to penalties.

Clark added: “I didn’t watch the penalties. I decided days ago that I would do that. I don’t enjoy penalty shoot-outs, as I know what it is like to lose them.

“So, I went into my office with Dean Hoyle and we watched them on television in the office.

“Unfortunately, on the television, there is a delay so we had Terry McDermott running in and telling us how it was going. Dean also had the door open to try and listen to the crowd’s reaction.

“It was actually Terry who told us we had won. He ran in and said, ‘We’ve done it.”

Clark, who will be at London Road for tonight’s second leg between Posh and the Dons, added: “I thought our performance was magnificent against a very good team. We showed great character.”

Bournemouth manager Lee Bradbury, whose side had finished sixth and 16 points behind Town, said: “It is a cruel way to lose but I would like to say well done to Huddersfield, who are on a great run.

“I wish them well in the final.”
