Coach David Wagner believes Huddersfield Town will be in safe keeping

The promising player, 20, had been monitored by Town in the second half of last season, having risen to prominence during the Latics’ upturn under former manager John Sheridan.

Bolton-born Coleman, who made 35 appearances last term, had a year left to run on his deal after the club invoked an option for a 12-month extension last month, but elected to cash in following an offer from Huddersfield.

On the 6ft 6ins No 1, Wagner, who has also been linked with a move for Liverpool reserve keeper Danny Ward, said: “Recruiting goalkeepers has been a big priority for the club in this transfer window due to Jed Steer’s return to Aston Villa and Joe Murphy’s injury.

“Joel’s arrival is an important part of this at first-team level. He will challenge for the number one position and with potential to develop into a fantastic goalkeeper.

“It is unusual for a goalkeeper aged 20 to have Joel’s first-team experience and he has shown lots of potential in his performances for Oldham, which we have watched closely.

“Obviously, a goalkeeper must be excellent at the fundamentals of the position first – keeping the ball out of the net – but Joel’s ability with the ball at his feet is also ideal for our style of play.”

Coleman’s capture follows on from the signings of German duo Michael Hefele and Chris Lowe and Wolves winger Rajiv Van La Parra, with the club strongly linked with a move for in-demand Southend United midfielder Jack Payne.

Doncaster Rovers’ Slovakian goalkeeper Marko Marosi has penned a one-year contract extension with the club.

Rovers – who re-signed Gary McSheffrey on a 12-month deal on Monday – will host Premier League newcomers Middlesbrough in pre-season friendly on Saturday, July 16.
