Colchester 0 Huddersfield Town 3: Clark admits tactical error

ONE of the only two remaining unbeaten records in the Football League is over after Huddersfield Town comfortably beat Colchester United.

First half goals from Lee Novak and Anthony Pilkington plus an opportunistic strike from Jordan Rhodes after the break were enough to seal the points for the Terriers, who in the process ended their own three-game losing run in League One.

Colchester, whose defeat now means only QPR of the 72 League clubs are yet to lose this term, battled hard to try and force their way back into the game.

However, a dogged Huddersfield defensive display in the second half meant there was to be no reprieve.

The U's came closest to making the breakthrough just after hour when Ashley Vincent headed straight at Ian Bennett from close range.

Town then sealed the points on 78 minutes when Rhodes rolled a shot past Ben Williams after taking advantage of some lax defending.

Even the 82nd minute dismissal of substitute Lee Croft for two yellow cards – the second for a scything late challenge on left-back Tom Williams - could not de-rail Lee Clark's men.

Town manager Lee Clark said: "I think I set the team up wrongly to be honest with you in the first ten minutes.

"I tried to match them up in the middle of the pitch and get Anthony Pilkington on the ball as much as possible.

"But they just put us under a bit of pressure so we reverted to the system we used Tuesday night and created a lot of opportunities."

Town have been drawn away to Rotherham United in the northern quarter-finals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. The tie will be held the week beginning November 8.
