Contented Stewart looking for derby response

DONCASTER ROVERS have endured a six-match winless streak, but loan winger Cameron Stewart has been able to take some personal positives.

He is finally enjoying his football again after being on the periphery at parent club Ipswich Town, whom he joined in the summer of 2014, as well as being embroiled in a bitter contract dispute with former club Leeds United.

The 24-year-old recognises that his days at Portman Road look numbered and while it remains to be seen where his longer term future lies, he is relishing life at Doncaster under Darren Ferguson.

Stewart said: “If I am realistic, (Ipswich manager) Mick McCarthy probably wants me to move on and I’d like to move on. But I have a year left so I will see what comes at the end of the season.

“I am really enjoying it here playing for Darren Ferguson and I am enjoying every minute I am out on the training field.

“Anybody that knows me will knows that this is the happiest I have been in a long while.

“Even when I have not been starting games, just to be part of something, and training, and enjoying it with the boys makes it the happiest I’ve been.

“You can’t always blame it on luck or managers coming and going, but I did have a difficult spell signing for clubs and managers going and loans here and there.

“I have gone through a tough patch, but am enjoying myself again.”

Rovers head into tomorrow’s derby at Barnsley under no illusions that a response is a non-negotiable after last weekend’s no-show against Sheffield United.

Stewart added: “The gaffer is always honest and he will defend us and back us. But the Sheffield United game was not the performance anybody wanted in a derby game; not the fans, not us or the manager.

“He made that clear after the game and I am pretty sure on Saturday it will be very different.

“We have had a little word with each other and we all know what it takes to get it right.

“Training has been a lot better and everyone knows exactly what is wanted and required.”

Rovers’ boss Ferguson is keen on retaining Lynden Gooch for the rest of the season, with his one-month loan spell from Sunderland due to end after Saturday’s derby.
