Scannell, 25, who joined the club in the summer of 2012, has agreed a deal which will keep him at the club until June 2019, with Town having an option on a further season.

The former Crystal Palace player is on the mend after recently returning to training following a knee injury – and while he will not be in the reckoning for today’s tough trip to Derby County, he could be available for the midweek game with Reading.

On Scannell’s new deal, head coach David Wagner said: “I am very happy that ‘Scanz’ has signed a new contract with us.

“He is a great Championship player with the potential to develop further, a great character and is one of the players who has taken our idea and identity onto the pitch every time he has played.

“As I have already said, securing our talented players to the club for the future is just as important as looking to bring new players in.

“This is the latest step in us doing this, following on from Joe Lolley, Harry Bunn and Joe Murphy.”

On penning fresh terms, Scannell added: “It wasn’t really hard at all.

“With the manager, and the way the team is at the moment, it leaves me excited at what the future holds for the club.”

Town will be aiming to rewrite history this afternoon in Derby, with the West Yorkshire outfit seeking to end their epic wait for a win in 23 visits to the East Midlands city.

Huddersfield have lost their last five matches in Derby and 16 of their previous 17 fixtures there in a remarkable sequence – for all the wrong reasons.

It was announced yesterday, that former Town player Julian Winter is set to be appointed as the club’s new chief executive – succeeding Nigel Clibbens, who left the club last month.

Huddersfield-born Winter, 50, recently resigned from his chief executive position at Notts County and he has also held identical roles at Sheffield United and Watford.
