Destination of captain's armband unknown ahead of Egypt friendly

Fabio Capello's whirlwind trip to South Africa this week has seen long-term plans for the World Cup finalised – but question marks remain over who will be his captain next week.

With John Terry sacked as captain over allegations about his private life, Rio Ferdinand was in line to take the armband for the friendly against Egypt next Wednesday.

But the Manchester United defender has suffered a setback three matches into his comeback from a back injury.

When asked if Ferdinand would be his captain for the tournament in the summer, the England boss simply replied: "Wait."

Steven Gerrard is Capello's next in line to lead the team out, although Wayne Rooney showed his maturity when captain against Brazil in November.

It was confirmed yesterday that England will use Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus as their training base for the tournament.

Parts of the complex, in the north-west of the country near Rustenburg, are still under construction but Capello and the FA have been assured the project will be delivered on time.

The other message from Capello during his trip was he will not tolerate poor conduct off the pitch from his players.

Capello wanted to make it clear that, when he returns to South Africa with his squad, nothing will distract them from achieving success.

England's match against Egypt will be their first since defeat against Brazil four months ago, and Capello added: "Four months is a long time.

"If you can meet the players every month it is different. We will have two days to stay together (next week) but they are very strong days."
