Doncaster Rovers 3 Scunthorpe 0: Sharp nets in derby triumph

Doncaster Rovers kick off the New Year with a fierce local derby with neighbours Scunthorpe United at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Doncaster were strengthened by the return from injury of James O'Connor and Shelton Martis in this derby encounter.

Joseph Mills, who came off the bench in the last game against Middlesbrough a fortnight ago, was also given his first start in eight games. Simon Gillett, ruled out since mid-October, returned as a substitute.

Kick-off was delayed on health and safety grounds due to there being only one instead of the minimum two ambulances required on site.

A replacement ambulance eventually arrived and the match kicked off at 3.59.

The delay obviously had an adverse effect on the visitors and it seemed game over by half-time after former Scunthorpe striker Billy Sharp had headed home in the 26th minute, James Hayter had slid in the second in the 38th and full-back Joseph Mills had raced in to meet a deep cross and sidefoot home in stoppage time for a 3-0 lead to Rovers.

So it proved with Doncaster in control throughout the second half even though Sam Hird was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 85th minute.
