This week’s updated standings here, with results including those in cup competitions. See if you agree with our latest ‘table’ - either way, feel free to post your own thoughts down the bottom in the comments section.

1: Doncaster Rovers WWWLWW (=) – Wonderfully consistent. Since losing at Hull in early December, Darren Moore’s Rovers have won eight of their last nine league outings to give themselves a real chance at the business end of League One. Rovers, who are second in the division’s six-match guide, possess the joint best home form, having amassed 26 points. They host Oxford this weekend.

2: Bradford City WWDDWW (=) – That interim duo Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars have yet to sample defeat in their eight matches in charge says everything about the sterling renaissance they have co-ordinated. City have won five out of eight under their watch. They were not at their best last weekend against Barrow, but still won - a good sign. A long trip to Exeter is next up for the Bantams, third in League Two’s six-match guide.

3: Sheffield United WLWWLW (+2) – What a difference a month makes. Three wins in their last five top-flight matches has given the Blades’ season the kiss of life, with Chris Wilder’s side holding their nerve in midweek with a vital 2-1 victory in their ‘must-win’ fixture with relegation rivals West Brom.

Loads more to do for sure, but the Blades have set up a base camp and will at least avoid the ignominy of being the Premier League’s worst ever side in terms of points accrued. Chelsea at home is next up for the Blades, tenth in the division’s six-match guide.

4: Rotherham United LWDWLW (=) – Another side whose mood and form has changed for the better in the New Year. The rejuvenated Millers - with Michael Smith and Matt Crooks in outstanding form up top - have won three of their past five league matches, losing just once, and delivered a superb 3-0 victory over Championship relegation rivals Derby in midweek. A trip to Preston is on the weekend itinerary. Eighth in the league’s six-match form guide.

5: Sheffield Wednesday WWLLWW (+3) – A big, big week has seen the Owls chalk off successive victories and their own form and that of the Millers is opening up the relegation picture. Wednesday’s weekend win over Preston represented the first time in five years that they have won four home league games on the spin. The midweek triumph at Bournemouth was even more impressive as the Owls won on the road for the first time at league level since October 17.

Caretaker boss Neil Thompson has presided over five wins in seven Championship games. Very, very impressive from where the club were. The Owls are fourth in the division’s six-match guide.

6: Hull City DWWLWL (-3) – The Tigers have won three of their past four games in League One and are a well-placed sixth in the division’s latest form guide over six matches, but there was midweek disappointment.

Their quest to reach Wembley in the Papa John’s Trophy was dashed by way of a penalty shoot-out defeat to Lincoln. Hull will be eyeing a spot of revenge when they face them at home in the league on Tuesday.

7: Leeds United LLLWWL (=) – After a brilliant weekend win at Leicester, Leeds showed their good and bad side against Everton with a fine comeback in vain after conceding two poor first-half goals. All things considered, United are still in a good place, even if their home form (15th best) is modest in comparison with their away statistics - the eighth best in the division. Leeds, who host Crystal Palace on Monday, are ninth in the division’s six-match guide.

8: Harrogate Town WLDDLW (+2) – Home comforts were afforded at last to Town, who picked up their first success at Wetherby Road in eight league matches with a key 2-1 win over Newport. After Saturday’s trip to Crawley, Simon Weaver’s side have three successive games on home soil.

9: Barnsley WLLWDD (-3) – The Reds are without a league win in five at the start of 2021, although they did secure a point in a stalemate at Nottingham Forest last time out. In mitigation, Valerien Ismael’’s side are not in bad form and have just negotiated a very tough January schedule. But they could do with a relieving victory at home to Derby this weekend. 18th in the division’s six-match guide.

10: Middlesbrough LLWLLD (-1) – Secured an excellent point at Championship leaders Norwich last time out, but Boro have won just once in six matches - not the form of a play-off aspirant. They face a toughie at home to Brentford on Saturday, with the Teessiders having lost their last three league matches at the Riverside without so much as scoring a goal. 14th in the league’s latest six-match rankings.

11: Huddersfield Town LLLLLD (=) – January seems to bring out the worst in Town, who have won just one league game in this particular month in the last four seasons. They will be hoping for better fortune in February with big games against Luton and Wycombe on the horizon. If their form does not change soon, the Terriers could be propelled into a relegation fight.
