Doncaster Rovers chief calling on everyone to work together

That will be an ongoing process going forward, according to the Rovers chief, with the mental health of footballers – and those of their families – being of paramount importance with the game being one of hundreds of job sectors across society that must cope with an uncertain future.

As far as Moore is concerned, football has a duty of care to be more responsible towards the needs of individuals.

Moore said: “Mental health is a huge component. People just think players are at home, but you are talking about someone who has been out there every day and has routine.

“Even though they are safe and well at home, it is not the norm at all.

“What some people don’t realise is that football has such a huge impact on the lives of so many people. It impacts on so many different levels.

“What might mentally affect one person might not affect another.

“We can easily disregard it, but at the end of all this, there may be a cleaning-up process in terms of us all being more supportive to families and players. Not just looking at the players on the frontline of the game.

“There’s a whole new procedure to look through and that’s why it is really important we all pull together and work together collectively to make sure there’s no serious cases happening.”

Alongside checking out the well-being of his players, Moore has also regularly spoken to supporters on the telephone to lift their spirits in difficult times.

It is something that the former West Bromwich chief has found to be enriching and rewarding.

He added: “Football is a massive and huge part of supporters’ lives and it is looking after the well-being of fans as well.

“There have been opportunities to speak to fans both individually and collectively as the club have a scheme where we have fans on our database. Some are at home alone and missing the football.

“We have called them personally and had a chat with them for 20 minutes to half-an-hour talking about football and how things are and it has been lovely.”
