Doncaster Rovers manager Darren Moore hopes start of a new league season frees the transfer market logjam

Darren Moore hopes the fact the new season is days away will help to free up the transfer market, but it could be some time before it hits “the ski slope”.

The Doncaster Rovers manager had no progress to report in his search to add to the squad before Tuesday's Football League Trophy game at home to Bradford City, but he hopes the opening round of league fixtures – which for his club means a visit from Milton Keynes Dons on Saturday – focuses the mind.

“We're still at that point where things could happen,” he explained.

“I just hope that with us leading into the season this week things will happen but it's a unique transfer window that doesn't close until next month so there's still time for clubs to take their time and to start the season, have a look at their team for a couple of games, then move people on.

“So far it's been relatively slow and then it just hits the ski slopes and runs away. Don't ask me why it happens every year, but it does.

“Maybe one or two teams might have one or two weeks to look at their team and hover around things before allowing things to happen.

“There's always going to be that excitement and that focus on the transfer window but you've got to get your head down and focus on the league campaign.

“As well as looking at the transfer window you've got to prepare as best you can because the fixture list doesn't wait for anybody.

“It''s a different season again and there's not right or wrong way to handle it, you just have to do as best as you possibly can.”

What Moore can control is decisions on the trialists who have been with the club this summer, such as former captain Andy Butler and ex-Rotherham United player Julian Lamy. They will be made before Tuesday's match.

“Before the game kicks off on Tuesday I've got a staff recruitment meeting and we'll discuss the two or three boys we've had in. That will be joint effort by everybody to decide if these players are for us or not for us.

“I've seen enough to make my mind up but we've got a procedure here now with Adam (Henshall, Doncaster's talent identification manager) and Gavin (Baldwin, the chairman) on board so there's a transparency about bringing players in and knowing why.

“We'll get together with all the information so we're clear as a football club.”

The transfer window closes at 11pm October 5, but domestic transfers are possible until 5pm on the 16th.
