McCullough, who featured late last season in a defensive midfield role, suffered a serious knee injury just 16 minutes into last Tuesday’s friendly win at York City, having caught his studs in the ground

The news is a major setback for Rovers ahead of their League Two opener at Accrington Stanley on Saturday and puts the tin lid on a fraught pre-season on the injury front.

New signings Mathieu Baudry and Joe Wright and Craig Alcock are among others who have been sidelined, leaving the club seriously depleted in defence.

The injury crisis forced Rovers to cancel recent friendlies with Kidderminster Harriers and Coventry City.

Meanwhile, Rovers have signed rookie non-league striker Alfie Beestin on an initial one year contract with the option to extend for a further year.
