Bennett quick to heed advice from the fans

The Doncaster Rovers winger has returned to the starting fold recently and, after being berated previously by fans for his lack of discipline without the ball, feels he is showing improvement at the most critical time of the campaign with he and his team-mates chasing promotion and the League One title.

Bennet said: “No-one is the finished article apart from Messi and Ronaldo and no player in this division is a complete one, otherwise you would not be playing in League One.

“We have all got faults in our game and you have to work on them and, hopefully, I am showing that.

“I think I have done all right and, defensively, I am working a bit harder.

“I heard about some of the fans speaking about my work-rate and have listened because they are the ones who pay their money and come and watch.

“Hopefully, I have taken that on board and applied that in my game. I will do whatever I can to impress the fans, even though defending is not a natural part of my game.”

Brian Flynn’s Rovers fluffed their lines in their quest to take a giant step towards the Championship in a 2-0 midweek reverse to Carlisle United in their third home match in just over a week on a lamentable surface at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Bennett admits playing at a pure footballing side on a good surface at Crewe should aid their cause today.

He added: “The pitch should be a bit better and we will be able to get the ball down and play a bit more.

“Three games in just over seven days was tough, especially on a pitch where it is hard to control the ball and you cannot dribble on it.

“It is really difficult. You have got to concentrate on your first touch without even thinking about passing the ball.

“But we are professional footballers and we have got to be able to deal with it.

“So we cannot make too many excuses. We were not at our best against Carlisle but we can always bounce back and have shown that ability throughout the season.”
