Championship latest: Grieving Sharp scores but Doncaster lose to Middlesbrough; Barnsley beat Hull

Doncaster striker Billy Sharp made a surprise return for his side’s npower Championship game with Middlesbrough tonight despite the tragic death of his two-day-old son.

Sharp was ruled out of the 1-1 draw with Coventry at the weekend due to an unspecified “family issue”, and it was revealed by the club this evening that Louie Jacob Sharp passed away on Saturday.

At the request of their team-mate, Doncaster’s players will lead supporters in a minute’s applause before the Middlesbrough game to celebrate the short life of Sharp’s son.

Despite the sad news announced only hours earlier, Sharp was a surprise inclusion in the Doncaster line-up to face Boro.

He took his place in the forward line alongside El-Hadji Diouf, who penned a three-month contract at the Keepmoat Stadium yesterday.

During the warm-up Sharp was afforded a warm ovation by the home fans.

On the pitch, Sharp put Rovers in front after just 14 minutes, before Barry Robson equalised on the half hour mark. Marvin Emnes then nudged Boro in front in first-half stoppage-time.

Robson added to Doncaster’s woes when he converted a 66th-minute penalty as Boro ran out 3-1 winners.

At Oakwell, Hull City’s Matty Fryatt missed a first-half penalty against Barnsley.

And the Tigers were made to pay for that miss, when Craig Davies netted for the second successive game for the home side, before Andy Gray made it 2-0 on 59 minutes.

Fryatt did manage to find the net on 79 minutes, to ensure an anxious last 10 minutes, but Barnsley held out to win 2-1.
