In-form Kyle Bennett struck again to maintain Doncaster’s 100 per cent away record.

Dickov said: “It was a very professional performance. I’m a little disappointed we didn’t put the game to bed. We had some great chances to score more goals and we have to be a bit more ruthless in that situation.

“But, overall, I thought our performance was fantastic.

“We started the game well. In the first 15 minutes we moved the ball well. Then the tempo of the game slowed and at half-time we wanted to pick that up.

“We did that and I thought we were worthy winners. The goal was a great finish from Kyle.”

Bennett scored his second goal of the season midway through the second half to follow up wins at Yeovil and York. The wideman finished coolly following a goalmouth scramble, after Dean Furman’s initial effort was only partially cleared.

Doncaster enjoyed the better of the possession before the interval but were more effective on the break in the second half.

Their goal came from a quick break from James Coppinger, who tormented his full-back throughout and also came close to setting up a second. He teed up Furman but his effort from two yards out was blocked.

Coppinger then released Theo Robinson but the striker took too long and his effort was blocked.

Colchester struggled for fluency throughout.
