Doncaster directors join fans in bid to boost fortunes

DONCASTER Rovers chairman John Ryan will abandon his seat in the directors’ box tomorrow to sit with fans at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Ryan, who underlined his support for manager Sean O’Driscoll, wants to encourage ‘unity’ among the crowd as injury-ravaged Rovers seek to end a run of 10 games without a victory against Watford.

“A minority of ‘so-called’ supporters have been heavily criticising the team, which is disappointing to say the least,” said Ryan. “At present, our fantastic manager – who has brought us nothing but success since his arrival – has 14 first-team players missing through injury, forcing our squad to be stretched beyond its means.

“Now is the time for everybody proud to call themselves a Doncaster Rovers supporter to get behind their team,” he added. “In line with that sentiment, myself and the directors will be right there in the Polypipe South Stand.”

Matt Lowton, meanwhile, has urged Sheffield United supporters to stick with their club in their battle to beat the drop.

The Blades host Derby County at Bramall Lane tomorrow and defender Lowton says the continued backing of the fans will play a key role in getting the team out of trouble.

New manager Micky Adams is still seeking a first win after 11 games in charge and supporters chanted ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’ at the players in the closing stages of a 3-2 midweek defeat at Scunthorpe United.

Lowton, 21, said: “Not so long ago, I was a young lad who used to go to games but it’s not until you’re actually out on the pitch that you realise what the buzz of the crowd feels like.

“They are entitled to their opinions, and there will be some who are upset, but overall they have been good this season, The fans will be very important against Derby.”

The Blades currently sit five points adrift of safety in the Championship relegation zone and dropped to next-to-bottom of the table after the defeat at Glanford Park. Despite reports to the contrary, Blades striker Darius Henderson is still several weeks away from a return to action after eight months on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Barnsley defender Luke Potter has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a setback in his attempt to return from a serious knee injury.

Potter, 21, suffered medial ligament damage against Leicester three months ago and has undergone two operations.

Rotherham United are expected to re-sign defender Danny Coid for a second spell on loan from Blackpool.
