Doncaster newcomer Furman sees no need to rein himself in

BRIAN FLYNN is hopeful that loan midfielder Dean Furman will be a Doncaster Rovers player for the long term.

The Oldham Athletic captain has swapped a League One relegation battle for a title tilt after joining Rovers for the rest of the season with manager Flynn delighted to have got his man after a long pursuit.

The financial problems at Boundary Park opened the door to a loan move for Furman, with Rovers having paid a fee to the Latics, who are resigned to losing the 24-year-old as he will be out of contract this summer.

Furman spent a productive loan spell at Bradford City in 2008-09 and is rumoured to have also interested Huddersfield recently.

Flynn said: “He is very much in our minds for next season.

“Dean ticks all the boxes and while it happened quickly, it has been on our minds for quite a while.

“I first saw him playing in 2006 for Chelsea as a youngster and he has been on my player list for a long time. He then went to Rangers and I have good contacts there and I kept my eye on him up there.

“Dean is very combative but composed on the ball and that is the key to why I have liked him for a long time. He is the right age and type to step up a division.”

Furman’s presence will bolster a central midfield area depleted by the absence of Martin Woods, Paul Keegan and Dave Syers, although the newcomer is mindful of being just one booking away from a two-match ban.

But the South African international – who will miss Rovers’ derby at Scunthorpe next weekend after being called up for Bafana Bafana’s Word Cup qualifier against Central Africa Republic in his native Cape Town – insists he will not be changing his style.

He said: “It is something I have got to watch, but when you play in the middle of the park, there are tackles to be made and you are going to pick up a few cautions. But I have been on my best behaviour in the past few weeks and haven’t picked up a yellow card and hope to continue to do that.”

On joining Rovers, he said: “It is very different type of pressure here, but I thrive under it. It is a great opportunity to be involved with a title-chasing team; there is nothing more exciting.”
