Doncaster Rovers 2 Leicester City 1: Sharp at the double in Rovers win

Doncaster Rovers shocked big-spending Leicester City at the Keepmoat Stadium in the Championship as Billy Sharp grabbed a double, writes Robert Gledhill.

Rovers made two changes for the visit of a Foxes side containing former Doncaster favourite Richie Wellens.

With Carl Ikeme and Neil Sullivan ruled out by thumb injuries, Dean Saunders selected 21-year-old Gary Woods in goal and brought Giles Barnes into midfield at the expense of Herold Goulon.

There was no place in the squad for short-term signing Lamine Diatta, the Senegal international centre-back.

Woods came to Doncaster’s rescue by tipping over a header from Steve Howard but the Foxes took a 38th-minute lead.

Howard flicked the ball down the left channel and strike partner David Nugent went past Sam Hird before curling the ball into the top far corner.

Two goal in two minutes after the break from Billy Sharp turned the game on its head.

He equalised in the 63rd minute with a close-range header from Marc Antonine’s cross and then hit a tremendous falling volley into the far corner after Brian Stock chipped the ball to the far side of the area.

Wellens twice fired wide from inside the area before the game went into stoppage time.

Substitute Jermaine Beckford also headed wide from 10 yards as Rovers held on for victory.
