Doncaster Rovers seek Grant extension from Everton

Doncaster Rovers manager Darren Ferguson has revealed he is keen to discuss extending Conor Grant’s loan from Everton past the January transfer window.

However, he admits that he does not know whether the Merseyside club will allow Grant to stay at the Keepmoat Stadium until the end of the campaign.

Grant joined Doncaster on October 29 on an initial one-month loan deal. The winger scored on his debut, firing home from 20-yards to open the scoring in a 2-0 win against Colchester United.

He has played all six of the games he has been available for since joining Rovers on loan and is one of two Everton loanees in the squad, along with Felipe Mattioni.

The 20-year-old, who spent part of last season on loan with Motherwell, had his loan extended until January 2 on Wednesday.

When asked whether there is the potential for Grant to remain at the Keepmoat beyond that date, Ferguson said: “I don’t know. I’ve got to have another conversation with Everton. I will be having that, it’s just picking the right time. It’s a busy period now; for them and us.

“I’ll probably speak to them in the next couple of weeks, as we’ll be getting to the middle of December by then. We’ll see what happens. Everton have been very good with us.

“They know that him and Felipe have really enjoyed it, so we are hopeful that something can continue, but of course it is their decision.”

Ferguson also hailed the impact of the youngster and said that he was not surprised that a player like Grant would come from Everton’s academy.

“He’s done well since he’s come in,” said Ferguson.

“He’s a good player, we knew that when we brought him in, but you never know how people will settle. He’s settled in quickly. He’s done very well for us, so we’re delighted he is staying.

“I think certain clubs you go to ground their players well, bring them up right, and Everton is certainly one of those. I know quite a few people at the club, good people, so you know what you’re going to get.

“They want to work hard, that’s the thing that they come with first and foremost. Add to that the ability, which is something he clearly has.”
