Doncaster Rovers star Coppinger wanted by Barnsley chief Hill

BARNSLEY have thrown their hat into the ring to sign Doncaster Rovers winger James Coppinger.

The future of Coppinger, 31, who has been at Rovers since 2001 and is due a testimonial when his contract expires in 2014, is uncertain with the club in the process of off-loading several senior top-earning players to slash their wage budget following relegation from the Championship.

The likes of Brian Stock and James O’Connor have already left the Keepmoat.

Nottingham Forest, managed by former Rovers chief Sean O’Driscoll, are also reportedly keen on Coppinger, with Hull City and Ipswich Town known admirers.

Reds manager Keith Hill, also keen on young Manchester City utility player Jeremy Helan and seeking to boost his threadbare squad ahead of Saturday’s Championship encounter at Brighton, said: “We’ve made an enquiry about James and we’ll have to see what happens. Hopefully, we can do something by the weekend.”

Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray was full of praise for young Chelsea loan recruit Josh McEachran after Tuesday’s 3-2 win at Burnley.

“He’s a boy who’s made a football decision to come and play in the Championship yet you could see the softness of his feet tonight,” said Mowbray.

“He controls the ball like it’s soaking into his body. He’s got such precision with his passing.

“I think he made the decision to come because we look like a team who play with the ball.

“Hopefully, he can help our football club and we can help him develop.”

Leeds United manager Neil Warnock wants to deal in the transfer market before the window closes a week tomorrow but is being held up by the ongoing financial uncertainty at Elland Road.

Owner Ken Bates has been in negotiations with potential investors over a takeover since June 26, and representatives of a major private equity firm in the Middle East were at the win over Wolves on Saturday.

“We have to work on the assumption we’re not bringing anyone in and go on with that,” said Warnock after the 2-1 defeat at Blackpool.

“Every manager wants more players and we don’t have options off the bench and that takes time. We have to muck on do what we can.”

He had few complaints about Tuesday’s outcome.

“Blackpool are a good side. They’re better than us. If we finish one place below them, I’ll be very happy,” he said.
