Doncaster Rovers: Weaver on his way to Donny as Saunders continues to strengthen

Doncaster Rovers are set to complete the signing of Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Nicky Weaver.

The 33-year-old will provide competition for Gary Woods and Neil Sullivan as Dean Saunders attempts to bolster his squad.

Wednesday manager Dave Jones confirmed yesterday that Weaver has agreed to move to the Keepmoat Stadium.

Weaver’s arrival is the latest deal in what is expected to be a busy final fortnight of the transfer window for Rovers boss Saunders.

“As we speak the squad is not strong enough,” he said. “If we had three or four injuries or suspensions we’d be in big trouble. That shows how brittle we are at the minute.”

His ability to keep players at the club will be just as important as who, or how many, he can attract, with James Coppinger the subject of interest from Doncaster’s Yorkshire rivals Hull City.

Coppinger, 31, is the longest-serving player at the Keepmoat, having joined Rovers from Exeter in 2004.

Saunders said: “We’ve had some contact with Hull City but nothing has been agreed and I don’t know if they are going to go through with it.

“I hope we don’t lose him because we’d have a better chance of promotion with him.

“But we have to cut our cloth accordingly, and if we do (lose him) we have to move on.”

Saunders is targeting three more wins from the first six games before he can consider the beginning made a bright one.

“We had a great start but we need to be looking at the situation after six games, not one,” he said.

Rovers hope to have midfielder Paul Keegan available tonight.

The Irishman missed the Walsall game with a hip problem.

Last six games: Doncaster LDWLDW; Bury WWDLLD.

Last time: Doncaster 3 Bury 1; April 3, 2004, Division Three.

Referee: S Sarginson (Staffordshire).
