Flynn urges Rovers to savour lofty position

Not only are his Doncaster Rovers side leading the way in League One, but they head east today to Scunthorpe with the backing of a travelling army of fans that the former Welsh international believes will help create an atmosphere “to relish”.

Flynn, after almost 10 years working in international football, is also savouring being involved in his first promotion race in many a long year.

He said: “I am really enjoying it at Doncaster. It is excellent to be involved in a promotion race again. I feel very fortunate, especially as I am at a club with good foundations and one that is properly run along the right lines by good people.

“The team is doing fine as well. We have put ourselves in a hugely promising position.

“Basically, we have our own destiny in our own hands.

“If we win all our games, we are up and no one will be able to do anything about it.

“It is going to be tough, as I can see everything going down to the wire. Maybe it will even take goal difference to settle the final positions.

“Having said that, the priority is winning games and not just scoring goals. But it shows how close everything is at the moment that it could come down to goals.

“Either way, times like this are ones to savour. I have said that to the players.”

Rovers will be without Dean Furman, the recent arrival from Oldham Athletic being on international duty this week with South Africa.

John Lundstram, however, is available after being passed fit by parent club Everton following an ankle injury suffered in last week’s 1-1 draw with Portsmouth.

Flynn, who led Wrexham to promotion in 1993, said: “I am expecting a real fiercely-fought derby at Scunthorpe.

“We have sold our full allocation of tickets and the atmosphere is likely to be a cracker, one for everyone to relish.

“Scunthorpe are fighting for their lives and we will have to match them all the way. But we have done well lately and have to fancy our chances.”
