Gillingham v Doncaster: Gobern is happy to finally make switch

Oscar Gobern insists he has no regrets over snubbing Doncaster Rovers to join QPR in the summer.

The 24-year-old chose Loftus Road and the chance of Championship football, despite talking to Rovers chief Paul Dickov, after leaving Huddersfield Town.

But Gobern failed to make an impact in London and jumped at the chance of first-team football with a loan move back to Yorkshire.

“I’ve not got any regrets,” said Gobern. “I went there with the intention of playing and you don’t know what will happen.

“I had a great few weeks while I was there and I can’t knock anyone. Football is football, it’s not worked out the way I would’ve liked but I’m here now and that’s the main thing,” added Gobern, who enjoyed his time at Huddersfield. “I did have a chance to stay (at Town) but for whatever reason it didn’t materialise. They were great as well, I can’t knock them. You make decisions and live and die by your decisions.

“It wasn’t the intention to come out on loan. Football changes all the time. I went there with the intention to play but it hasn’t happened for whatever reason. Thankfully, the gaffer has given me a chance here and a platform to play. I just want to show the fans what I can do.

“You’ve got to respect the players that are at QPR. They’ve got a big squad, a lot of money and they’re chucking it around.

“I went there, gave it my best and, obviously, at the time it’s not worked out. I’m here on loan and I’m here to help Doncaster.”

On a proposed earlier move to Doncaster, Gobern added: “We had a chat, he (Dickov) was great with me. He understood my situation that I was in at the time. I went to QPR and since then he’s stayed in contact, he’s always been great and it’s worked out.”

For Dickov, he holds no grudges over Gobern’s decision to opt for Championship football over League One.

“He is somebody who I have been trying to sign throughout the summer,” he said. “He decided to go with QPR, but has not had the game-time he wanted.

“As soon as we found out he was available, we moved quickly to get him. We were a little bit surprised, but delighted to sign him.

“It was not easy to do, but Oscar and I spoke a few times in the summer and he was keen to come. You can’t blame him for signing for QPR and the position he was in.”
