Huddersfield’s pull proves far too great for striker Stead to ignore

JON STEAD has rejoined Huddersfield Town after agreeing a two-year contract, with the club holding an option to extend the deal for a third year.

Stead, 30, returns on a free transfer after leaving Bristol City, 10 years after moving from Town to Blackburn Rovers.

Barnsley were also reportedly interested in the forward.

Stead said: “A few things made my decision an easy one. Obviously I’m a Huddersfield fan and have been since the days I started as a ball-boy here, so this place has a massive pull.

“Me and my family had three very good years at Bristol City and the relationship with the supporters was one I hadn’t felt anywhere since I left Huddersfield, so coming back here was the only move that made sense once I left there.”

Town are also in talks to sign ex-loan player Adam Hammill from Wolves.

Walsall centre-forward Febian Brandy is set to be confirmed as David Weir’s first signing as Sheffield United manager.

The former Manchester United trainee, whose contract at the Banks Stadium expires at the end of the month, has rejected a new deal and also rebuffed interest from Championship side Yeovil to join the Blades.

Brandy, who scored seven goals in 33 appearances for the Midlands outfit last season, is expected to be unveiled ahead of the Blades’ squad reporting back for pre-season training tomorrow – barring any unforeseen hitches.

Doncaster Rovers have boosted their midfield ranks by signing former Real Madrid B player Marc De Val Fernandez, who becomes manager Paul Dickov’s first signing. The 23-year-old Spaniard, who moved to Madrid from Espanyol four years ago but never played for their first team, has signed a two-year deal.

Former Hull City assistant-manager and Manchester City manager Brian Horton has been confirmed as Dickov’s No 2 at the Keepmoat Stadium while Paul Gerrard has replaced Lee Butler as goalkeeping coach.

Hull City are expected to complete the signing of Birmingham centre-half Curtis Davies, 28, today.
