The 33-year-old had resigned himself to leaving Rovers, having not been offered fresh terms by the board after his Keepmoat deal expired at the end of June.

But with Middlesbrough in position to complete a £500,000 deal for left-back James Husband, which is also expected to see Boro striker Curtis Main head to Doncaster, Rovers’ room for manoeuvre on the budgetary front is likely to lead to a new deal being offered to Coppinger.

The attacking midfielder also has interest from Championship clubs are Barnsley are also keen on signing him.

Given his 10-year association with Rovers and his popularity with supporters, finishing off his career at the club – and the probability of becoming the leading appearance maker in Rovers’ history – would represent a major lure.

Coppinger will hold talks with Rovers this week.

Leeds-born Husband, who has played 64 times for Rovers and was linked with Hull City earlier this summer, is understood to have agreed personal terms with the Teessiders.

Former Huddersfield Town captain Peter Clarke, who had been on trial at Rovers, has been offered terms by former club Blackpool.

The 32-year-old is well known to Blackpool’s fans – playing 100 times for the Seasiders in two spells between 2002-2006.

Hull manager Steve Bruce has confirmed the Tigers’ interest in signing Carl Jenkinson on loan from Arsenal and is also working towards finalising a deal to sign Dundee United left-back Andrew Robertson.

On Robertson, he said: “We think he’s an exciting player; he’s had a meteoric rise and we think he’s going to be a really, really good player, so let’s hope we can get it over the line.”

With Arsenal close to signing Southampton full-back Calum Chambers, having already bought Newcastle United’s French international right-back Mathieu Debuchy, Jenkinson is likely to fall down the pecking order at Emirates Stadium.
