Johnson eager to repay Jones if handed his St Andrews bow

Roger Johnson could be plunged into his Sheffield Wednesday debut at former club Birmingham City this weekend.

The 30-year-old centre-half finally ended an unhappy two-year spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday, following back-to-back relegations, by agreeing a three-month loan deal at Hillsborough.

And with the Owls desperately searching for their first win of the Championship campaign, manager Dave Jones may be tempted to throw Johnson in at the deep end at St Andrews - the club who sold the defender to Molineux for £4m in 2011.

“I know what the Championship is all about and I have massive belief that I can do the business at Sheffield Wednesday,” said Johnson, who will become the third first-teamer with the same surname at Wednesday, joining Reda and Jermaine.

“This is a really good move for me and when the opportunity came around, I knew it was right for me. I’m a footballer and I just want to play football.

“The gaffer has given me the chance to come here and I am going to take it with both hands and am looking forward to it.”

The move allows Johnson to be reunited with Jones, the pair working together at Cardiff City before the defender moved to Birmingham for £5m.

Johnson said: “I had great times with the manager at Cardiff and he has put his faith in me again and I won’t be letting him down.

“I’m looking to come here and play games. There are 17 games that I am here for throughout the loan period and I’m just looking to do as well as I can for the club and get myself back playing.

“I’ll be pulling and pushing a few people around. The gaffer has asked me to come in with my experience and make my voice heard on the pitch and that’s what I’ll be doing.”

Manchester United striker Federico Macheda is keen to extend his loan period with Doncaster Rovers beyond an initial month.

Macheda made his debut as a substitute in their 2-1 defeat at Watford and the 22-year-old said: “It would be a shame to be here just a month. If I can stay until January, that would be great. I’m really looking forward to more playing time.”
