Johnson, 33, became the youngest manager in the Football League when he succeeded Dickov at Boundary Park in March 2013 and the Scot has been impressed by the job he did with the Latics, operating under similar financial constraints to those he worked under in Lancashire.

Dickov believes that Johnson, who has signed a deal with Barnsley until June 30, 2013, has earned his chance at Oakwell, where his playing budget will be superior to that at Oldham.

Dickov said: “I am delighted for him (Johnson).

“I know it is a tough job at Oldham and he has done a great job there.

“He is a good young manager who is very forward-thinking and Barnsley have made a great appointment there.”
