League Cup draw: Barnsley’s shoot-out win earns crack at Everton

BARNSLEY last night landed the plum tie of the Capital One Cup second round for Yorkshire’s remaining representatives by drawing Premier League side Everton.

The Reds needed a penalty shoot-out to get past Scunthorpe United on Tuesday night, but their reward came with a clash against the Toffees.

It could be an early chance for Mason Holgate to face his former club after moving from Oakwell to Goodison Park in a deal that is understood to have been worth around £1m.

With the tie due to take place in the week beginning August 24, the game could also bring a return to South Yorkshire for Chelsea target John Stones.

But Everton will be without Leighton Baines, who is set to be sidelined for around three months after undergoing ankle surgery.

Elsewhere, York City were handed a meeting with Premier League opposition after landing a trip to Swansea City.

Rotherham United will also face a top-flight club in Norwich City.

Sheffield United travel to Fulham as Steel City rivals, Wednesday, host Oxford United.

Hull City’s reward for edging past Accrington Stanley on penalties earlier this week is a home tie against Rochdale.

Doncaster Rovers, meanwhile, will host Ipswich Town after seeing off Leeds last night.

Manager Paul Dickov said: “It will be another tough game against a Championship team. Mick McCarthy’s side are always tough to play against.”
