Match Centre: Doncaster 0-2 Notts County - Sharp set to leave Rovers

Sharp, who was left out of today’s FA Cup defeat at the hands of League One Notts County, has been in terrific goal-scoring form this season and is now set to meet Leicester officials for talks.

While it is not yet clear how much Rovers will get for their man, chairman Jon Ryan has always stated that a fee of around the £3m mark would be enough for them to sell.

Leicester have had a difficult season, despite being one of the richest clubs in the country, sacking manager Sven Goran Eriksson last year and bringing in former Hull boss Nigel Pearson.

Sharp leads the club’s scoring charts with 10 league goals this season and his value to the team is proven when you look at the second-placed player being James Hayter with just four.

Manager Dean Saunders could certainly have done with his star man against Notts County as Rovers carried their league struggles into the FA Cup.

The first half was largely uneventful until County took a 38th-minute lead. Alan Sheehan floated a free-kick over right-back James O’Connor and Jeff Hughes stole in at the far post to score with a low right-foot shot.

Doncaster were just as lacklustre after the break and Jeff Hughes made it 2-0 in the 70th minute when he sent Button the wrong way from the penalty spot after Kyle Bennett had tripped Sheehan and Beye had flattened Alan Judge in the same passage of play.

Saunders said: “I’m really disappointed. No matter how much you warn the players, I knew Notts County were a decent team. They are well organised and good at set-plays.

“Last week we gave it everything we had and this week we just looked off the pace.

Rovers manager Saunders ‘rested’ Sharp and brought in striker Mamadou Bagayoko after he received international clearance after joining on five-month contract from Greek club Giannina.

Habib Beye came in following the return to West Ham of left-back Herita Ilunga, Adam Lockwood continued in central defence for the injured George Friend and Giles Barnes replaced Simon Gillett in midfield.

Spurs loanee David Button kept his place in goal.
