McCarthy’s mind is solely on winning

Against the backdrop of the furore surrounding Ched Evans – the former striker who has been invited to train with the Blades after his release from prison for rape – Clough has gone quietly about his job.

With no wins in their last three games, and no goals, the Blades face a derby trip to Doncaster Rovers today needing a lift.

Clough is desperate to recruit a striker – forwards Michael Higdon and Marc McNulty are out until next month – but has had no joy in the loan market.

But the return of Crystal Palace defender McCarthy, who has joined on loan until December 28, has been a welcome piece of good news.

McCarthy, who was on the substitutes’ bench at Old Trafford last weekend for Palace, goes straight into United’s team at the Keepmoat.

“I am delighted to be back here; it was an easy decision for me as I enjoyed my first month,” said McCarthy, who played five games for Blades on loan last month.

“It’s not just games, I am up here first and foremost to win. For this loan to be successful the team have got to be winning.

“I don’t just want to come here just to play games for myself. I am a team player, I want them to be winning and for the club to move forward.”

The Blades have signed Ilkeston striker Che Adams.

The 18-year-old has penned a two-year deal at United, who have paid an undisclosed fee.

Clough said: “We have had an eye on Che for a while. We have been aware of the interest in him from elsewhere and we have managed to beat off competition from clubs in leagues above us to secure his signature.”
