O’Driscoll betrays his dismay as Jewell continues to revive Ipswich

Doncaster Rovers manager Sean O’Driscoll greeted his side’s record home loss to Ipswich Town on Tuesday night with anger and exasperation.

Rovers slumped to a 6-0 defeat to Paul Jewell’s in-form Tractor Boys as their woeful league run stretched to just one win in eight games.

And if his players received just a fraction of the tongue-lashing members of the press were treated to in the post-match press conference, they will have been in for a serious dressing down.

On entering the press conference, O’Driscoll began: “First stupid question then, come on.”

When asked whether he thought the scoreline was unfair on his team, O’Driscoll responded: “Definitely.”

An inquiry about his levels of disappointment was given short shrift.

“That’s a stupid question, how disappointed I am. I’m (holds out hands roughly a metre apart) that disappointed.”

After adding “Come on, ask me something I can answer”, O’Driscoll quickly followed with “Right, see ya” and left the room to bring proceedings to a close.

Contrastingly, and understandably, Jewell – the former Bradford and Sheffield Wednesday manager – was rather more upbeat, after Connor Wickham’s hat-trick made it four wins in six for the new manager.

“He put a lot of yards in. He’s learning the game, he’s learning a different position and it will add another string to his bow,” Jewell said of Wickham.

“It’s a team and a squad effort that we’re trying to build here and confidence is important.

“He’s 17 and he’s got people talking about him.

“He’s got huge potential, everybody knows that.”

Ronnie Moore described Rotherham’s 2-0 win over Accrington Stanley as ‘huge’ as it got their League Two promotion campaign back on track, though not with their ‘best performance’.

“We have played well in the past and got beaten, but we had that little bit of luck,” said Moore, who is considering a move to bring full-back Danny Coid back in on loan from Blackpool.

“We got the goals at the right time, led a bit of a charmed life and our ‘keeper made one or two good saves, but that’s what gets you in the top three.

“Our passing wasn’t up to scratch and we are not kidding anybody because we know we didn’t play well.

“It wasn’t a brilliant performance but it was full of effort, determination and grit and we got that little bit of luck.”
