Rangers midfielder McCabe joins Owls but Jones leaves for Rovers

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY have agreed a deal to sign attacking midfielder Rhys McCabe – while captain Rob Jones is set to complete his move to Doncaster Rovers today.

The Scottish Under-21 international was one of a host of players to reject the transfer of his contract to the newco Rangers last month and will join the Owls on a three-year contract subject to international clearance.

McCabe, 20, had been linked with a move to Portsmouth, but has now opted for a deal with Championship newcomers Wednesday and is expected to become their eighth summer signing.

McCabe made nine appearances for Rangers in the latter stages of last season after making his senior debut against Hearts in March.

Meanwhile, former Scunthorpe defender Jones, 32, has left Hillsborough by mutual consent after just over a year at the club.

Jones, who had a year left on his Owls deal, made a total of 45 appearances for the club, scoring five goals but has been deemed surplus to requirements by Owls chief Dave Jones.

Portsmouth administrator Trevor Birch is hoping for a speedy verdict from a Football League tribunal which will rule on money owed by the club to former player Kanu.

Kanu has departed Fratton Park, leaving Dave Kitson, Tel Ben Haim and Liam Lawrence still on the books, but his representatives still want a reported £3m from the club in lost wages and Birch has asked for a tribunal to intervene.

Birch has warned unless the club’s remaining senior players either reached agreement over unpaid wages or left the club, Pompey will go out of business.

Wolves have signed Mali international Tongo Doumbia on a season-long loan from Rennes. The 6ft 3in midfielder moves to Molineux with a view to a permanent deal.

Rangers have drawn holders Falkirk away in the second round of the Ramsdens Cup, played in the midweek of August 14-15.
