Rovers await welcome windfall as Mills prepares to become latest arrival at big-spending Leicester

DONCASTER Rovers will scoop a £600,000 windfall when former defender Matt Mills completes a £4.5m move to Leicester City.

Rovers sold Mills to Reading for £1.5m two years ago but insisted on 20 per cent of the profit from any future transfer deal.

Leicester beat off competition from Premier League clubs Wolves and Stoke City yesterday to land Mills, who spent two seasons at the Keepmoat Stadium and helped Rovers win promotion to the Championship.

The final fee could rise to £5m – depending on Mill’s performances – and bring even more money into the Rovers’ kitty.

Defender Sam Hird, meanwhile, has signed a new one-year deal with Rovers. The 23-year-old joined the club four years ago after being released by Leeds.

Manager Sean O’Driscoll said: “Sam knows the place inside out and we know what to expect from him. The one-year deal is something which suits both parties.”

n Rotherham United have agreed an undisclosed fee with Bristol City for the transfer of striker Ryan Taylor.

The Millers wanted around £500,000 for Taylor who is a product of the club’s youth system and still under the age of 24.

Chief Operating Officer, Paul Douglas, said: “We have negotiated a good deal which we felt adequately compensated Rotherham United.

“Although we were disappointed that Ryan decided to leave the club, we understood his desire to play at a higher level.

“As a Rotherham lad Ryan has been at the club since he was a schoolboy, ultimately graduating through our very successful youth system.

“On behalf of everyone associated with the club I would like to thank him for his effort, commitment and professionalism whilst he was a Rotherham player.”

n Leeds United defender Ben Parker is aiming to save the club money in the transfer market by putting to rest his two-year injury nightmare.

Parker has struggled with hamstring, hip, and calf problems over the last two years and has undergone seven operations.

Speaking ahead of the club’s pre-season trip to Scotland, he said: “I know I’ve got loads to prove, not only to the manager here, but everyone at Leeds.”

Although Federic Bessone is also hoping to mount a challenge, the left-back spot has been a problem position for Leeds manager Simon Grayson and currently appears to be up for grabs.

“It’s strange that no one has nailed down the spot,” said Parker. “From my point of view, that’s good because, if I can get the opportunity, I intend to grab it with both hands.”
