Rovers in at double as Owls and Town chase McIndoe

DONCASTER Rovers are set to announce the capture of former Leeds United captain Richard Naylor and Sheffield Wednesday defender Tommy Spurr.

The Leeds-born duo have agreed personal terms and will become Doncaster’s first new signings of the summer at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Naylor, 34, was a free agent after being released by Leeds while Spurr, 23, will cost £200,000 from Wednesday.

Manager Sean O’Driscoll needed new defenders after parting company with Wayne Thomas, Dennis Souza and Matthew Kilgallon at the end of last season.

Former Rovers winger Michael McIndoe, meanwhile, is a target for Wednesday and Huddersfield Town after leaving Coventry City.

He has not been offered a return to Rovers despite reports to the contrary.

Midfielder Ryan Burge, who was released this summer by Rovers, has joined Port Vale.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Gary Megson has stepped up his bid for Ipswich Town striker Jason Scotland after talks stalled with top target Neil Mellor.

Megson wanted Mellor to return to Hillsborough on a permanent deal after impressing last season on loan from Preston North End.

However the former Liverpool striker, 28, has been unable to agree personal terms with the Owls and is ready to see out the final year of his contract at Deepdale.

Preston manager Phil Brown said: “I’ve spoken to him and Neil’s very positive about playing for North End. I spoke with Neil after the season finished and he believed there was a Championship club coming in for him. He wanted to play Championship football but now he’s very positive about giving Preston a full season. If you’ve got a player who’s going to score you 20 to 25 goals in one season it’s a good start for me.”

The possible collapse of the Mellor deal has prompted Megson, meanwhile, to pursue Trinidad and Tobago international Scotland.

The Owls face competition from promoted Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion for the 32-year-old, whose previous clubs include Swansea City and Wigan Athletic.

Owls chairman Milan Mandaric has also confirmed that Megson is interested in former Welsh international midfielder Jason Koumas, released by Wigan Athletic.

Koumas, who worked previously with Megson at West Bromwich Albion, finished last season on loan at Coventry City.

Winger Jermaine Johnson is ready to commit his future to the Owls after rejecting interest from promoted League One rivals Chesterfield.
